Cultural Competence for Health Care Professionals

The new module Cultural Competence for Health Care Professionals is complete.  After studying three books, I decided upon the following required textbook:

Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness, 7th. edition, by Rachel E. Spector

The textbook is available on amazon.com.  This text will be replaced by the new 8th. edition after it is available.  It is connected to a website that provides the study assignments for each chapter, including quizzes, which have been incorporated into the Via Vita module along with other assignments and preceptor skills verification, to meet NARM requirements.

The other books that I have studied, and which I do recommend are:

*Guide to Culturally Competent Health Care, 2nd. edition,  by Larry D. Purnell, and
*Transcultural Health Care, A Culturally Competent Approach, 3rd. edition, by Larry D. Purnell and Betty J. Paulanka

The above two textbooks cover a large number of cultural heritages, which can be very beneficial if one is practicing midwifery in a community with a multitude of cultures represented, or plans to travel to different parts of the world.

Here is the beginning of some interesting links to explore:

  1. Hi Sharon,
Thanks for creating a module for us in light of NARM's updated requirements! I am wondering if I purchase the 7th ed., will I still be able to utilize the website's quizzes and supplemental materials once the new 8th ed. is released?
    Thanks again!,
    Rachel

  2. Hi Rachel,

I think I replied to this privately. If you purchase the 7th. edition, the supplemental materials will continue to be offered once the 8th. edition is released.

  3. Would you please considering offering this Module (and perhaps others) on a stand-alone basis for CEU credit? Many current midwives would benefit from your wisdom and timely inclusion of diversity studies.

  4. Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. The Midwives Association of Alaska (MAA) CEU Committee could adopt it and assign CEUs. I could approach them about it. Even if you are in another state, I think the CEUs would be acceptable since they are connected to the licensing board. I will have to check into it. The state regulations accepts CEUs that come from MANA, MEAC, and MAA.

I also have created another course that MAA is supposed to assign 4 CEUs. That course is Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy. I developed it after a midwife peer was reprimanded for breaking a regulation and the state demanded she take a course on it. The state accepted the course.

I am beginning to see I should be thinking along the lines of small refresher courses that can to administered online, something very convenient for busy midwives or those who are remote and cannot get to a conference.

Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I will give it serious consideration and will post it on FB and this blog when I get the approval. In the meantime, what other small course would be appealing? The Hypertensive course is pretty hefty. In fact the midwife that took the course said they needed to offer at LEAST 4 CEUs because it is so in-depth.

    Kind Regards,

    Sharon
